Unique 3D Stereo maker and up/down mixing tool – MS processing

I do procrastinate a lot, and I often watch music-making related videos to fulfill this suspended time, because I like music crafting. Some of this food-for-the-void is absolutely boring, but sometimes light emerges from the void… I came across this video :

I’m a bit nerdy about stereo, yeah I like pairs of speakers, and when I saw « king of spatial processor, 3D effects etc… » on the video title I didn’t expect anything new or unheard to mine-kind, because I’m bored when I procrastinate and because there’s rarely anything « new » in the plugin world.

But, if you’ve watched the video you probably now understand that this wasn’t a boring one. Yeah, the plugin is not looking very pretty, and that maybe is a good sign (are they selling something more than a pretty GUI to trick your mind??), but did you hear that?!! They’re tricking your ears! And no other plugin does THIS!

It was clear to my ears that the magic here was, at least partially, relying on some phase-fucking technics I used in pAnarchy. I can’t afford this amazing DrMs.

I hate depending on 3rd party plugins; the less I need, the better I feel. But I want to use this everywhere! I had to install the plugins’ demo, find how they did it, and find how to replicate in M4L.

That wasn’t easy: I do sound design, not DSP sorcery…

I have no scientific background (afaik!), and my M4L knowledge is hence focused on event processing because that’s basically about MIDI – which is easy to understand – and some basic « logic 101 ».

The signal processing side of Max (which is the « MSP » side, btw) isn’t my best friend. But I like Max, and I’m always happy to spend time with MSP, even though I’m shy. And don’t forget: I had to replicate this amazing and unique DrMs. No choice, it has to be done before the plugin’s demo period is over, period, go for it, now, stop procrastinating.

And make sure the Push mapping is spot-on ffs!

Long story short, DocPhase was born. It’s a rip-off, a tribute, a pun, and an almost unique device. It’s way less expensive than the original, it runs only in Ableton Live… but who needs another DAW? And unlike DrMs, DocPhase is ultra-light on the cpu and is a breeze to use from Push thanks to its dynamic mapping.
